Supercars: Scott McLaughlin edges closer to Peter Brock's record with Sydney win
The legendary Peter Brocks V8 Supercars record will have to wait for Kiwi champion Scott McLaughlin after a Sunday to forget in Sydney. Two-time defending champion McLaughlin endured a horror end to the weekend at the Sydney Supersprint, slumping to 14th in the final race. The Ford flyer - who won Saturday nights opening race of the round under the new permanent lights at the Eastern Creek venue - had been expected to equal Brocks career tally of 48 race wins. That triumph was McLaughlins 47th career race victory and edged him within one win of the late Brocks mark. The last five laps I was in trouble so I was just hanging on and I got there somehow. This weekend's results meant McLaughlin opened up a 107 point championship lead over Jamie Whincup heading into next month's double-header in Darwin. Earlier in Sundays first 32-lap race, Holdens Nick Percat secured another win, backing up his triumph at the same circuit three weeks ago. In less than a month, Percat has doubled his Supercars career win tally from the previous nine years. Before his third career victory last month, Percats previous Supercars race win came at the 2016 Adelaide 500. Percat won the Bathurst 1000 on debut in 2011 and began his full-time driving career in 2014.He put together a smart race on Sunday, picking off McLaughlin and Red Bull Holden ace Shane van Gisbergen, as the pair started from the front of the grid.
