What do Vicosa, in Minas Gerais, and Antarctica have in common? In the Brazilian countryside, far from snowy lands, lies a vault of Antarctic secrets. The city more specifically the UFV (Federal University of Vicosa) hosts one of the worlds leading Antarctic soil banks. It currently holds 3,715 samples from more than 650 soil profiles segments that reveal soil composition catalogued and available for research. The bank is the result of over 20 years of expeditions to Antarctica. It allows researchers to monitor the continents changes due to the climate crisis and its responses to it. It acts as a facilitator for studies without needing to send new missions. Recently, a study based on the banks data found that climate change may green parts of Antarctica and turn them into carbon sinks.
