COP30, the UN climate change conference, began this Monday (10), and its effects are already visible in Belem. Over the weekend, tourist spots such as Estacao das Docas and the Porto Gastronomico were packed. "There wasnt even room to place a foot on the ground," said Jurema Werneck, director of Amnesty International. Local vendors report a significant increase in sales. "We sold about 40% more," said Sara Melo, from the Bombom do Para kiosk. At the Museum of the Amazon, which reached 50,000 visitors in one month, coordinator Camila Costa noted the growing presence of foreigners. French tourist Michel Orivel said he came because of the conference and praised the local hospitality. The hotel sector is also benefiting: the average occupancy rate is 95%, according to ABIH-PA. "Some hotels are full, and others almost," said the association's president, Tony Santiago. According to Creci-PA president Maria Luisa Carneiro, 45% of rental properties remained vacant after owners raised prices to what was considered unrealistic earlier in the year. Official delegations are staying at Vila COP, a hotel built specifically for the event, with daily rates around R$ 1,600. "Belem is prepared to receive everyone. The City Park is well structured," said Sergipes environmental secretary, Deborah Dias. For Belem residents, the intense movement is a preview of what will come until the end of the climate summit. "It was a weekend of lines everywhere," summarized Camila Costa.
