COP30 Sanitation Works Are Moving Slowly

The Lula and Para governments, led by Helder Barbalho, have already delivered two sanitation and drainage works in Belems channels, as part of the ongoing interventions for COP30 (climate change conference). However, sewage collection services are incomplete, and residents report abusive charges for treated water. In other ongoing work fronts, there are projects that are practically stopped or proceeding at a very slow pace, with expired contracts and continued sewage and trash being dumped into the channels of peripheral areas of the city, which will host COP30 in November. The federal government, BNDES the bank responsible for financing most of these work fronts and the Para government are carrying out sanitation and macro-drainage works for rainwater in 13 channels in Belem, both in upscale and peripheral areas. The actions are an attempt to resolve part of the historical problems in the city's occupation and development, where canals and streams were occupied in a disorderly manner. The Para government says the works are being monitored by offices specialized in large events, and there is daily supervision.
