President Lula has decided to appoint Ambassador Andre Correa do Lago as the president of COP30, the UN climate conference, which will take place in Belem from November 10 to 21. Lago serves as the climate secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has twice led Brazil's climate delegation: at the most recent conference in Baku and the previous one in Dubai. Thanks to his experience and connections across various sectors, his appointment is well received by both environmentalists and business leaders. He also has a good rapport with the agribusiness sector, which is typically more resistant to the Workers Party (PT) government. The ambassador has a long career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and comes from a family with a strong tradition in the field. He is the grandson of Oswaldo Aranha, the Brazilian who presided over the first UN General Assembly in 1947, an event that marked the creation of the State of Israel and the partition of Palestine. He also played a direct role in drafting Brazils decarbonization target under the Paris Agreement and, at the 2024 G20 summit, advocated for environmental issues to be included in the events final declaration. For the executive leadership of the event, in the role of COP CEO, the government has chosen the current climate secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Ana Toni.
