Brazil Reaches Its Lowest Number of Clean Beaches
This year, the country reached the lowest number of beaches classified as good in six years, points out a survey carried out since 2016 by in the summer, which begins this Wednesday (21). Only 29% of the 1,334 spots monitored from November 2021 to October 2022 were clean in all measurements, against an average of 36% in the same previous periods. The account does not include 2020 when monitoring suffered a blackout due to the pandemic. The total number of bad beaches also increased in the same comparison (from an average of 10% to 13%). The numbers of regular (26%) and terrible (16%) locations remained at the same level but increased compared to last year. The remaining points were not measured (16%). The deterioration is observed more than two years after the approval of the new legal framework for basic sanitation, which encouraged the participation of private companies in services and defined 2033 as a target for the universalization of drinking water and sewage collection and treatment. For Luana Pretto, president of the Trata Brasil Institute, it will only be possible to see the practical effects of the law on the environment and on the quality of life in two or three years supposing there are no repeals signaled by Lulas transition team (PT), seen by her as a setback.
