UN scientists call for change to human diet to limit climate change
Cutting fossil fuel emissions alone won't be enough to stop global warming, according to a new report released by UN scientists. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warns that agriculture, wide-scale forestry and other land use now accounts for almost a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions. Debra Roberts, one of the report authors, said, "Some dietary choices require more land and water, and cause more emissions of heat-trapping gases than others." "Balanced diets featuring plant-based foods, such as coarse grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables, and animal-sourced food produced sustainably in low greenhouse gas emission systems, present major opportunities for adaptation to and limiting climate change," she said.
