‘Striking’ findings on ant honey having medicinal benefits
University of Sydney microbiologist Kenya Fernandes says there have been striking new findings on ant honey having medicinal benefits for people. The first really interesting thing about ant honey, although it is similar to bee honey in that is nectar sort of collected and processed by insects, its quite different in its physical properties, she told Sky News Australia. Its watery for one, which is really interesting, so were kind of sceptical as to whether it would actually have any microbial properties at all. But when we tested it, we found that not only did it have really, really strong activity against some potential human pathogens but also that its activity seemed to be quite unique, so something that is different from the other types of honey bee medicinal honey that we would normally use.
