Labor keen on ‘bold promises’ but ‘weak on the mechanisms’ for climate change
Manager of Opposition Business Paul Fletcher says the Labor government is very keen on symbolism and bold promises in regard to climate change. His comments come as the UN has warned the world is on the brink of catastrophic warming and called for developed nations to fast-track net zero targets ten years earlier to 2040. What is important is that we have clear and achievable mechanisms and what we do have in the Labor party is a government thats very keen on symbolism and bold promises but they are often very weak on the mechanisms, he told Sky News Australia. The scientific consensus in relation to climate change and the need to reduce emissions is well understood. The challenge then for policymakers in Australia is what are the achievable, deliverable processes to get to the outcome. Its well accepted that natural gas is a key transition fuel so we can reduce our reliance on coal.
