Rushing ahead of the world on climate change will have ‘negative impact’ on economy
Labor frontbencher Joel Fitzgibbon says rushing ahead of the rest of the world and being too ambitious on climate change will have a negative impact on the economy. It comes as the Labor Party drafts its new climate change policy which will ditch its controversial 2030 emissions target while maintaining a net-zero emissions target for 2050. We set the net-zero emissions target, thats a good thing, weve got plenty of time to think about how we might get there, Mr Fitzgibbon told Sky News host Chris Kenny. Trying to rush ahead of the rest of the world and be too ambitious on climate change will have a negative impact on the economy not a positive impact. Mr Fitzgibbons comments are in stark contrast to the message sent by Labor in the 2019 election campaign when the party argued a strong climate change agenda would deliver green jobs to substitute the jobs lost in coal and gas. Done slowly and assuredly and with the proper planning and with the right ambition and the right timelines then it (a climate change agenda) can of course be a net positive for the economy, he said. But at the moment we need to focus on jobs and job security. Image: News Corp Australia Read More Our Apps
