Credits: Video - AM; Images - Supplied Five Restore Passenger Rail protesters have been arrested after blocking a central Wellington street and causing traffic delays in the Capital on Monday morning. Police said the five people arrested will now face charges following the protest action. The protest took place on The Terrace, near Bolton Street, where a number of protesters blocked the road. Members of the public gathered to watch and heckle the protesters, calling them idiots and swearing at them. NZ Herald reports a woman in her car could be heard calling out the window that commuters are "just trying to get to work to feed our kids". Another member of the public shouted at the protesters, "I don’t care, just f***ing let us get on with our lives". One driver tried to squeeze his black SUV past the protesters, driving onto the kerb to get past but police arrived just as he got past and blocked his exit. This is the sixth protest within six weeks where Restore Passenger Rail protesters have blocked or attempted to block traffic. Four people were arrested after a protest on State Highway 1 at the Terrace off-ramp last Thursday. Demonstrations were also held on Adelaide Rd, Vivian St and the entrance of the Terrace tunnel. There was also an attempted blocking of traffic on Johnsonville Rd but protesters were stopped before they could start by police. Restore Passenger Rail spokesperson James Cockle said if the Government fails to act to tackle climate change, crops will fail resulting in starvation and millions of refugees. "As the climate continues to heat and we see the devastating effects here and around the world, we must continue to put pressure on our government to honour their promise to tackle climate change," Cockle said. "As we hurtle towards a 1.5 degree warmer world our government has us on a highway to climate hell with its foot on the accelerator. We are on a path to exceed three degrees of warming based on our government's actual actions and policies."
