Natural, man-made factors major causes of climate change – Expert
Professor Babagana Muhammad, an environmentalist has said that natural and man-made factors have remained major factors responsible for climate change across the world. Prof. Muhammad stated this on Monday at a three-day training on climate change awareness, adaptation and alternative energy as well as the energy efficiency holding in Damaturu. The training attracted participants from women groups; traditional Rulers; religious leaders, Non-governmental Organizations, Community-Based Organizations, environment specialists and farmers groups. Prof. Muhammad, who is the lead consultant for the training, expressed optimism that with such workshop climate change is reversible as will widen the horizon on the issue at hand. The Managing Director North-East Development Commission, (NEDC), Mohammed Goni Alkali, represented by Adamu Lawan said the aim of the training is to create more awareness on climate change, adaptation and use of alternative energy among other important. According to him, in this regard, the Commission will train 50 women and on alternative energy sources with a view of reducing the menace of deforestation. He, therefore, urged the participants to pay maximum attention and understand the knowledge to be impacted by resource persons. In his remarks, Yobe State Commissioner of Environment, Sidi Yakubu Karasuwa, represented by the Director Forestry of the Ministry, Garba Tahir said the training will surely complement the efforts of the government in the state towards mitigating environmental challenges. "To curtail the menace of climate change, the State Ministry of Environment has raised three million seedlings and distributed them to people across the state, Karasuwa said.
