The United States government on Thursday fulfilled the promise made by President Donald Trump to his Brazilian counterpart, Jair Bolsonaro, to support Brazil's bid for the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development). The official announcement was made in Paris, behind closed doors, during the ministerial meeting of OECD, a think tank of best economic practices that brings together most of the developed countries. The promise of Trump to Bolsonaro was made during the Brazilian's visit to Washington in March. Bolsonaro promised in exchange that Brazil would give up special and differential treatment in the World Trade Organization (WTO), which it had the right to as a developing country. Via Twitter, Itamaraty celebrated the American agreement: "Today in the OECD, the USA has expressed in a clear and official way its support for Brazil's bid to join the OECD, a priority of President Jair Bolsonaro." The support surpassed the expectations of the Brazilian delegation, which did not expect a formal manifestation of the American delegation. This does not mean, however, that the admission right away is assured for Brazil. At the moment there is no date for the beginning of the admission process, which would extend over the next few years - usually between two and five.
