Former cop appeals conviction and suppression ruling
A former policeman charged with assaulting a mentally unwell teenage girl at the Nelson Police Station has appealed his conviction and suppression ruling. The 44-year-old man, who cannot be named, was convicted of three charges of assault in the Nelson District Court on June 10. The former Sergeant, who has resigned from the police since the incident, pleaded guilty to the charges which arose while dealing with the young woman during an incident in December, 2018. The man applied for a discharge without conviction and permanent name suppression, both of which were declined by Judge Garry Barkle. The man was ordered to pay $1200 in emotional harm reparation to the victim and to 75 hours community work. The appeal will be heard in the High Court next month.
