Brazil Should Take The Lead in Solution to The Climate Crisis, John Kerry Tells Folha
John Kerry, the special envoy on climate forthe American government and main link of the diplomatic relationship between the White House and the Planalto, says that Brazil has a responsibility to lead in the solution to the climate crisis, under an inspection and collection scheme designed by Joe Biden's team. In an exclusive interview via email, Kerry said he was willing to negotiate with President Jair Bolsonaro, without discussing sanctions. But he reinforced that immediate action and results are the only factors that can overcome the Brazilian leader's lack of credibility, who is known for his negligent environmental policy. He also added that there is still a demand for a "reduction" of deforestation still in 2021. Called Biden's climate czar, the former US Secretary of State says the United States will follow the measures taken by the Brazilian government to fulfill promises made by Bolsonaro during a Climate Leaders Summit, convened by Biden in April. "The words must be supported by concrete action in the short term," says the American.
